		<description><![CDATA[That is a really good alternative! I&#039;ve also spent time trying to figure out how to make different levels of upkeep more relevant to gameplay. Most of my thinking has focused on using the carrot rather than the stick, but perhaps I should approach the problem from a different perspective!]]></description>

		<description><![CDATA[I once tried (unsuccessfully) to tie the chance of contracting mundane diseases to the D&amp;D 3.5 &quot;upkeep&quot; variant. Since there was no real mechanical benefit to choosing more expensive grades of upkeep my players always went with self-sufficient (if they owned land) or poor. So, I wrote up a random d% chart for the various upkeep stations that included starting out an adventure in a state of malnutrition or contracting various illnesses due to poor &amp; unclean surroundings, lack of preventative medical treatment, etc. 

I think it could have worked if I had put some more time into it. It didn&#039;t work, though, mostly because I implemented it long before I realized how important it was to thoroughly track in-game time.]]></description>
